Cereals benefit organic dairies, Capital Press, 4/29/11

Two years of testing found advantages and limitations in growing grains — especially barley — for organic dairy forage. Wheat, triticale and oats were also analyzed for growing practices and nutrition. Heather Darby, extension agronomist at the University of Vermont, said adding grains to the cropping system reduces dairies’ reliance on grain purchases and extends the grazing season. Darby, a sixth-generation farmer, earned her doctorate in horticulture at Oregon State University.
